18 cities that are worth visiting in winter

Australians are spoiled for many things. Beaches. Rainforests. Stonefruit. However, one thing we aren’t world renowned for is our winters. When the mercury plummets, Australians tend to cower in their poorly insulated homes wearing every jumper they own, panicked by a season that arrives predictably every year. But this is not the case in the great cities of Europe and America. Not only are places like Copenhagen and Chicago snowy and crisp with ice during winters, they’re also beautiful and enviable tourist destinations – offering cosy pubs and cafes, picturesque rivers full of ice drifts, and in some locations, like Oslo, aurora borealis (better known as northern lights). These winter wonderlands are so stunning and so foreign to Australians; it’s no surprise that thousands of us escape the heat and jet off to them every year.

We have heard similar questions before. I wrote an article in the early 1990s, after the first Gulf war and the economic downturn, quoting experts who said company bosses had noticed a fall in costs from the resulting decline in travel and decided to make it permanent. Similar things were said after 9/11. Every economic slowdown produces the same statements.

How modern companies are disrupting business travel

Article | March 4, 2020

For decades, people had two ways to make travel arrangements. There’s also corporate travel management, used by business travelers and companies with no time or patience to plan for frequent work trips. Unlike personal travel, business travel has several limitations: which airlines and hotels a company can book with, where and how bookings can be made, and what expenses are considered valid for reimbursement.

After all, does it make sense to pay for traffic if consumers aren’t buying travel?
