Business travellers more health-conscious on trips

New research reveals business travellers are growing more health-conscious while on the road, with those in some regions more aware of their habits than others.Globally, 42 per cent of travellers surveyed by travel management platform CWT said they work hard to adhere to their health and wellness routines during a work trip. This is compared to 38 per cent who said the same in 2017.Overall, 38 per cent of business travellers said they eat healthier while on the road. Those in Asia Pacific are the most likely to eat healthier on a business trip (46 per cent) compared to those in the Americas (35 per cent) and Europe (29 per cent).

Just over a month ago, many of us sat in our offices, surrounded by colleagues, engaged in deep discussions about how best to leverage the increasing demand in travel this year. As per the World Tourism Organization's (UNWTO) forecasts from earlier this year, international tourist arrivals were expected to grow by 4% in 2020, which is not as great as the growth seen in 2017 (7%) and 2018 (6%), but it was still enough to continue fueling the tourism industry, which contributes to about 10.4% of the global GDP and approximately 319 million jobs. We were blissfully unaware of the looming threat of the COVID-19 global pandemic. In fact, several parts of the world failed to take notice of this crown-shaped virus that was about to bring everything to a grinding halt, until March 11, when the World Health Organization officially announced it as a pandemic.

Will the travel industry adopt white box AI?

I recently attended a Venture Beat webinar entitled: 3 Keys To Moving Toward White-Box, Explainable AI. The panel discussed varying degrees of transparency in respect to understanding the output from artificial intelligence, the worst being a black box where the underlying decision is masked in AI algorithms. So what does this all mean? Of course, in the travel industry, we traditionally have a different term for a “black box”, but in the context of AI, a black box output implies that it may be challenging for the target audience to understand the rational for a given decision.
