KAYAK and Babbel Team Up to Help Travelers Learn a Language for their Next Trip

KAYAK and Babbel | November 11, 2021

Travel ranks among the top three reasons Americans want to learn another language, according to a recent survey from KAYAK, the world's leading travel search engine. One quarter (almost 24%) said they simply feel more comfortable visiting a country where they can speak the local language, while nearly the same (23%) want to avoid the embarrassment of mispronouncing a word.

To help Americans travel like a local while speaking like one too, KAYAK and Babbel are teaming up to launch linGO - a one-stop-shop for travel planning and language learning. Focused on where to go, when to book, and top phrases to consider as restrictions ease (like how to ask for directions or for the check at dinner), linGO pulls together both travel and language hacks to make the most of your next trip.

As more countries open up their borders to travelers, KAYAK data reveals the best time to book an international trip for a good price is five months in advance - more than enough time to get conversational in a new language. And, with international travel searches over the last two months continuing to increase weekly, now is the best time to get that trip on the books.

To help get you started, KAYAK curated travel hacks for its top trending destinations, based on Babbel's most popular languages (Spanish, French and Italian), to provide data-driven pricing insights for flights, stays and rental cars so you can easily plan and budget for your next trip.

  • Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, is seeing a 170% increase in search share compared to 2019; the best time to l book your flight is three months in advance
  • Consider traveling to Nice, France, in January when median flight prices hover around $472 - a 36% decrease from flight prices in December - and average rental car prices are around only $36 per day!
  • Celebrate the holidays in Florence, Italy, where you can snag a stay in December for as little as $133 per night - the cheapest stay of KAYAK's top- trending italian destinations
  • Budget conscious travelers looking for an international getaway should consider Cancun, Mexico, where flight prices come in under $500 roundtrip

"KAYAK's survey revealed nearly half of Gen Z (46%) have attempted to learn a language in preparation for an upcoming trip,By teaming up with Babbel, KAYAK is giving travelers access to even more tools to personalize and uplevel their travel experience with language content tailored for transit, dining and connecting with locals."

- Matt Clarke, VP of NA Marketing at KAYAK

When traveling wasn't an option, we still saw that one of the biggest reasons for Americans to learn a new language was preparing to travel," said Julie Hansen, US CEO, Babbel. "This shows that being able to communicate when visiting another country plays a big role in planning a trip. This is why we're partnering up with KAYAK to give travelers the best experience possible, from the time they decide on a destination to the adventures they have in their new language while away.

Nearly half of Americans (46%) revealed that learning a language would positively impact their travel experience by making them more confident when traveling. So, KAYAK and Babbel are giving travelers the extra confidence boost they need by giving away 15 lifetime language subscriptions to Babbel via a holiday sweepstakes. And, three of those lucky few winners will receive the ultimate vacation experience which includes one lifetime subscription to Babbel and a $2,800 gift card to be used for a 7-night vacation to one of KAYAK's top trending destinations.

New Research by Roomex and GBTA Reveals Top Travel Management Challenges in 2022

Roomex | July 19, 2022

New research conducted by the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA), in partnership with Roomex, the workforce travel platform, has unveiled the state of business and project travel in 2022. Findings from the survey, completed by over 100 Travel Managers in the US and Canada between March 29 and April 15, 2022, has revealed the growth of business travel post-COVID and the methods top businesses are using to manage their staff travel. Demonstrating the resurgence of workforce travel post-COVID, the survey found that a third of businesses have some significant overnight accommodation needs, with between 25% – 100% of the workforce staying overnight at least once a week. Sixty six percent said between 1% – 24% of their workforce stay elsewhere overnight at least once a week, with only 1% saying they have no accommodation needs at this time. A third of businesses surveyed stated that their average room nights booked per month exceeded 500, with 13% booking between 200 – 500 and 18% booking 100 – 200 room nights per month. Project-based travel is particularly prominent, with 39% of businesses saying their organization engages in "a lot" of project travel. Rising costs featured prominently in the survey, with accommodation price featuring in 82% of travel managers' responses when asked: "What is most important when managing corporate travel?" Seventy nine percent of respondents called out visibility and reporting as an important feature, while 57% noted the importance of duty of care/safety. Just 32% highlighted the price of airline tickets. Compliance enforcement topped the poll in booking challenges, with 60% of travel managers admitting that getting their staff to stick to travel policy is a challenge their organization currently faces. Fifty one percent noted that traveler satisfaction is also a challenge, pointing to the importance of maintaining strong employee relations in the new post-COVID workplace. Keeping track of all company travelers (38%), keeping track of travel spend/budget (30%) and unsuitable accommodation types (17%) also ranked among the challenges travel managers face in 2022. "It is clear from the research that while workforce travel has returned for most businesses, the challenges facing travel managers and finance teams have changed. Rising costs and a renewed focus on traveler satisfaction mean that travel managers need a flexible, efficient and innovative solution to keep up with their organization's travel requirements. Roomex solves this problem and enables every travel manager to take that extra coffee break, safe in the knowledge that they've got the best rate and their travelers will be happy." -Garry Moroney, CEO of Roomex Christopher Ely, Research Director at GBTA, said: "In our ongoing GBTA research, we've seen a continued evolution in the challenges that travel managers are now facing. This data around project-based travel and high room night volumes provides insights on what travel managers are thinking about now for their employees and companies, and how they are navigating new considerations as a result of the pandemic and other factors." Optii Solutions Adds Multiple New Languages to Its Platform

Optii Solutions | August 04, 2022

Optii Solutions, the leading hotel operations software, announced that it has added multiple new languages to its platform, to further support its European expansion. Several additional languages are also in development with release dates in the next 30 to 60 days. With travel, tourism, and hospitality drawing a particularly diverse workforce from around the world, the need to seamlessly communicate across languages and avoid errors is critical. Optii is designed to break down gaps and lags in communication with the goal of increasing productivity and establishing a repeatable and scalable guest experience within a hotel. Language barriers can disrupt the gains hotel operations would otherwise achieve from the implementation of technology, because instructions or staff communication is missed or misunderstood. Seamless translation to 20 languages within the same technology platform avoids this. It also leads to a better work experience for the staff who can choose to work in the language they are most comfortable with. The company has for some time supported core languages that are prevalent in the industry and workforce, but with shifting demographics, the need to add more languages is critical. This has proven true especially in the European market, where Optii is expanding with several new hotel group customers. “As we grow into new markets, the make-up of the workforce looks different and we need to account for that. Being a customer-centric technology provider, a lot of our roadmap items come from our customers. This is the case with our latest expansion into several European markets. Not only will we deliver on the customer needs, but we can also play a small part in bringing their workforce together and breaking down barriers.” -Katherine Grass, CEO, Optii Solutions About Optii Solutions Optii Solutions is a hotel operations solution that leverages smarter technologies such as artificial intelligence, analytics, messaging and mobility to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of housekeeping and service delivery departments.
