USA TODAY | November 30, 2018
Mount Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79 and buried the Roman city of Pompeii, located near what is now Naples. Ever since the ruins were rediscovered in the 1700s, they have been attracting tourists. Visitors can explore the preserved streets and learn about how the ancient civilization lived and worked. Even the common houses and insulae (apartment buildings) are standing in recognizable form. The city also has its share of major monuments as well, such as the amphitheater and the Temple of Vespasian. Take a tour with the photo gallery above.
