Regulator spent £1m on Thomas Cook

More than £1 million was spent on fees to external advisers by the aviation regulator before the collapse of Thomas Cook. The Civil Aviation Authority spent £660,000 on advice from Alvarez & Marsal, the turnaround specialist, which was appointed in March six months before the travel group failed. Reed Smith, the law firm, was paid £590,000 and appointed in mid-April, a freedom of information request showed.
