Automated Driving and Platooning Issues and Opportunities

Automated control of throttle and brakes is not new to the heavy vehicle industry. Electronic throttle control became commonplace starting in 1990. This eliminated the mechanical linkage to the engine. Radar-based Adaptive Cruise Control systems were first introduced in 2008 and approximately 100,000 trucks operate with ACC today, almost all of the Class 8 vehicles.
